Joseph G. Cosby is a Senior Counsel with Butzel Long Tighe Patton in our Washington, D.C. office. He concentrates his practice on complex commercial litigation, nonprofit law, and election law.

Mr. Cosby advises a wide range of charities, trade associations, political organizations and other nonprofit organizations. Mr. Cosby assists in preparing applications for the IRS to recognize his clients' tax exempt status, aids them in managing their relationships with the IRS and other agencies and organizations monitoring nonprofit organizations, advises them on federal and state compliance issues unique to nonprofit organizations, assists in employment, compensation and contract issues, assists them on unrelated business income tax and other nonprofit tax issue, and advises them on the full range of other issues that nonprofit organizations face on a regular basis. Among other organizations, Mr. Cosby has advised political campaigns; charities active in public policy issues; medical, housing, and other programs providing assistance to the poor, religious organizations; educational programs; trade associations; and national and international charities in navigating U.S. legal requirements unique to them. Mr. Cosby has over 30 years experience working with and for nonprofit organizations and over 20 years experience serving as an officer or director for a wide variety of nonprofit organizations, giving him a unique understanding of the practical issues nonprofit organizations face.

Mr. Cosby has provided litigation services and advice to clients concerning a broad range of areas, including bankruptcy, commercial transactions, ERISA, environmental clean-up, telecommunications, securities, insurance coverage, Constitutional law, the Privacy Act, attorney malpractice, international trade, real estate, banking, and white collar criminal issues. Mr. Cosby has trial experience in numerous cases including successfully trying a patent infringement action in front of the International Trade Commission.

Mr. Cosby served as a law clerk to the Honorable Jerry E. Smith, U.S. Court of Appeals, Fifth Circuit. He graduated cum laude in 1988 from the University of Michigan Law School and graduated from the University of Chicago, where he obtained his A.B. Mr. Cosby is a member of the bars of the District of Columbia and Massachusetts.
